Once scary, now stylish, skulls are trendy—and not just at Halloween

Death Jam Skulls, once seen as sinister symbols, are now used on everything from children’s shirts to underwear. Sara Dickerman of Slate takes a look at how the trend developed:

In the 16th century, artists like Albrecht Dürer were still using skulls to remind people of their mortality.

French Pirate Emanuel Wynn was the first to use the skull-and-crossbones logo on his ship’s flag.

As skulls came to symbolize bravado, fighters—from US special operations to the Nazi SS—used them on uniforms.

Mourning jewelry was fashionable in the 19th century, and the “look” lived on thanks to bands like the Grateful Dead and Loree Rodkin, who launched a line of Goth jewelry in 1989.

Mexican art of smiling, dancing skulls, used to celebrate Dia de los Muertos, helped skulls become more widely accepted.

The skull became an icon in 1970s London counterculture, where Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood launched a series of skull-inspired punk gear.

Skulls became truly fashionable thanks to Alexander McQueen, whose scarves have been spotted on Kate Moss and the Olsen twins.

Talk about crowdsourcing: a group of Stars Wars fans is trying to make an entire movie out of fan-generated versions of Star Wars scenes.

The user-generated version of Star Wars: A New Hope, coordinated at Star Wars Uncut, is coming along nicely, with over 400 clips submitted so far.

The project even has its own trailer, viewable below (we’ve included a few sample clips too). It’s not just a piece of extreme geekery for your weekend enjoyment – Star Wars Uncut is a prime example of how large scale crowdsourced projects can now be coordinated with relative ease, thanks to the web.

If you’re an obsessive Twitter user, you probably notice when someone stops following you. How do you figure out who it is, though? It can be tough, especially if you have a lot of followers. Well, now there’s FriendOrFollow, a site that tells you who’s not following you back, and who you’re not following.

FriendOrFollow is handy for discovering new folks to follow, adding people you might have forgotten, and dropping people (if you’re the type to ditch those who don’t reciprocate.)

FriendOrFollow is a lot like another service that’s been around for a while, Twitter Karma, but it’s faster and more reliable. Since there’s been more than one attempt to implement this functionality, there must be some kind of demand for it. Perhaps one day you’ll see it built into Twitter.
